Macbeth, the last of Shakespeare's tragedies, is unique in several ways. Unlike the political issues at the centre of the Roman tragedies, the issues most important in contemporary readings of Macbeth are those concerning evil and failure, salvation and damnation. Macbeth is uniquely conscious of the his evil deeds, highlighting the moral issues raised by the events of the play.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, in a state between hallucination and madness, yet acutely aware of their own powers and limtiations, are two of the most powerful Shakespearean characters in that they represent many of the complexities and tumults of the human psyche.
