For much of the century, Romeo and Juliet has been declared by critics as inferior to Shakespeare's other great tragedies. However, in recent times its status has been upgraded in the Shakespearean canon.
The play reflects the interest in sonnets of the 1950s, but to the same extent it departs from many dramatic traditions. Its polarity between love and hate and its handling of time were both departures are both examples of long-standing conventions that were reviewed by Shakespeare in this famous tragedy.
