Poe wrote of poetry's purity in his criticism, while writing theatre reviews that would shift copies for their ruthlessness. He began his literary career with verse that would charm readers with its musicality, and became famous for later stories of imponderable bleakness.

One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story. Poe's stormy personal life postponed honest evaluation of his work in the United States - first he gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school secured his place in the literary hall of fame.

POE, EDGAR ALLAN (1809—1849), American poet, writer of fiction and critic, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, on the Içth of January 1809. The family was of English origin, but was settled in Ireland, whence the poet’s great-grandfather emigrated to Maryland. His grandfather, David Poe, served with credit as a soldier in the War of Independence, was known to Washington, and was the friend of Lafayette. His son David Poe was bred as a lawyer, but deeply offended his family by marrying an actress ... [read entire biography]
