Anthony Burgess

1917 - 1993 *

novelist and critic, born in Manchester, whose works address social concerns.


Anthony Burgess was born and educated in Manchester. He worked briefly for the ministry of education and then served abroad in Borneo and Malaya.

Burgess' work explored extensively the relationship between literature and music. Additionally, his work addrsses many social concerns. His most famous novel, A Clockwork Orange, follows a group of violent youths in a future age who adopt their own language and terrorize society. The work developed a cult following after its release as a motion picture in 1971.

Burgess was also a renowned literature critic, analysing the works of many classic literature authors.
