William Wordsworth
Expanded Timeline:
| 1770--Born in Lake District 1777--Loses mother; separated from sister Dorothy 1783--Father dies; Wordsworth sent to grammar school 1790--Walking tour in France, becomes a republican sympathizer 1791--Degree from Cambridge; returns to France, affair with Annette Vallon 1795--Moves from London to Dorset; Dorothy (his sister) joins him and they never live apart again 1797--Friendship with Coleridge commences. Lyrical Ballads published anonymously. 1798--Spends winter in Germany with Dorothy 1799--Settles at Dove Cottage, Grasmere. Southey and Coleridge live nearby, and they are all known as the "Lake Poets." 1800--Another edition of Lyrical Ballads published, with preface. 1802--Meets Annette and daughter in Calais. Marries Mary Hutchinson. Starts "Intimations Ode," then drops it for 2 years. |
1804--Finishes "Intimations Ode"
1805--John, his brother, drowns. Elegiac Stanzas published.
1807--Poems, in two volumes
1812--Two of his children die. The Excursion published (laments about his childrens deaths--"Surprised by Joy").
1813--Settles at Rydal Mount where he spends the rest of his life
1815--Collected Poems and "The White Doe of Rylstone"
1819--Peter Bell and The Waggoner
1820--Duddon sonnets
1822--Ecclesiastical Sketches
1843--Succeeds Southey as poet laureate
1850--Dies at Rydal Mount April 23. Buried in Grasmere churchyard. The Prelude published.
