Fanfiction is a relatively new literary form, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. It does not have--nor is it ever likely to have--much literary respectability, because it does not require an author to create his or her own characters and settings from scratch; rather, he or she merely builds on the work of another. But fanfiction can, at its best, provide an excellent spring board for quality writing.
